The Aboriginal and Islander Community Health Service Brisbane Limited was founded in 1973. The Family and Child Health Team was set up to sensitively care for ours mothers and babies. This section was put into place to cater for the needs and concerns of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander families in the greater Brisbane region. Traditionally, families were always close together. Today, in our modern times, the family is under a great deal of stress. Our mothers need the support of others to help when there is a need. While this section is set up for Mothers and Babies, the purpose is not t isolate them from problems related to male members of the family. Rather it provides a place for Mums to visit while attending to necessary follow-ups on our families. Indigenous women have babies with lower birth weight and it is important to strive for changes with programs that are culturally appropriate. We have trained Aboriginal and Non-Aboriginal staff to care for them. We send an open invitation to those who are already mums and those who are expectant Mums, to visit our Centre and chat with the Team in the section. Like all cultural groups around the world, our children are our futures and we must carry a personal commitment to caring for the children from before they are born. Click ...
